I was an assistant editor on a movie one time when a well known Hollywood expert commented to us that Orson Wells supposedly learned to direct Citizen Kane by watching Stagecoach 100 times. The expert pointed out that at least ten scenes in Stagecoach were so badly shot or edited that the lefts and rights didn't match. Watch it and see, the guy was right but the lefts and rights matched perfectly in Kane so I guess you can learn from bad stuff as well as good stuff. At least you can if you are as talented as Wells was and you can absolutely mix up lefts and rights if you are as talented as John Ford was.

Jane Russell has always been one of my favorite movie actresses. How wonderful it must have been for you to actually meet her! She could deliver a line with the most amazing dry wit - and always looked absolutely wonderful. She starred in some fabulous movies including one of my favorites as well, "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". I also liked her in "Road to Bali". It really made me want to visit Bali and while it took many, many years, I finally was able to go there for two weeks and kept imagining myself in a Hope and Crosby movie while I was there. Of course it was hardly anything like the film, but it was fun thinking about that movie and how exotic Jane Russell was in it. Just think - in another year she will be ninety!

Happy Birthday Miss Russell! Wow, she is one smart, feisty, and sexy lady. I always liked seeing her in her films from the '40s and '50s (my favorite is "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"), and it's been a pleasure seeing her more recent interviews on Turner Classic Movies as well.
