With all due respect, here's the problem with that theory, K: most of the films discussed above have actually been in development for years, in most cases before Obama was even a candidate, let alone President. There's a great deal of lead-time that goes into prepping these projects, even though a lot of them are just now getting picked up.

With that said, yes it probably helps these things that Obama is now in office, for the reasons you site.

What new hidden fear do we have that is being sublimated into our movies?

Snort.

In the spirit of Ocam's razor, I prefer a simpler explanation. For the entire Bush administration, Hollywood has avoided sure fire money making movies about the war on terror or anything that even smacks of supporting American exceptionalism as it would, even indirectly, support Bush. With their team in power the dam can now burst, just as long as "the terrorists" are not the bad guys.

With members of the NSDAP (and Republicans) long since played out as bad guys to the point of cliche, commies and aliens can step up to the plate as the PC-harmless horrors. Hollywood gets rich, the audience feels good about themselves and their country and we all accept our patriotic duty to pay our healthcare taxes.

I certainly hope you're right about this, although I'll hold my applause for the moment... I just don't trust these Hollywood guys, they've got too much to answer for. And I have this sneaking suspicion they think a lot of us are the aliens, you know?

I place a lot more hope in the indie films you guys are always talking about, like "4 Lions." That's a very positive sign.
