Fresh Video: North Korea’s Largest Military Parade Ever + Kim Jong Il’s Heir Apparent

The UK Guardian’s Dan Chung has done some great video reporting from Asia in recent years, and we wanted to show you some fresh video footage from him of a massive North Korean military parade – supposedly the nation’s largest ever – that was recently held in order to ‘introduce’ Kim Jong-il’s heir apparent , Kim Jong-un. This was Kim Jong-un’s most public appearance since being named as North Korea’s next leader.

Among the proclamations made at this parade was the following:

Ri Yong Ho, chief of the general staff of the North Korean army, said at the event: “If the US imperialists and their followers infringe on our sovereignty and dignity even slightly, we will blow up the stronghold of their aggression with a merciless and righteous retaliatory strike by mobilising all physical means, including self-defensive nuclear deterrent force, and achieve the historic task of unification.”

New Medal of Honor Takes the Battle to Afghanistan

By Jason Apuzzo. Did you folks see the debut of the new Medal of Honor trailer last night during Monday Night Football? I’ve embedded it above. This new game from EA takes place in Afghanistan, following Special Ops forces. The trailer is quite cinematic in flavor, and almost appears to be a re-telling of recent offensives in Afghanistan.  You can read more about the game at the Wall Street Journal’s Speakeasy blog today. The game was designed in collaboration with some of our special ops guys.

One extremely unfortunate note, though: there’s apparently an option in this game to ‘play’ on the Taliban side, as it were – which is really tasteless.

Could The New Halo Movie be the anti-Avatar? + French Women & Hollywood Round-up, 10/12

By Jason Apuzzo. • I’m still tantalized by the notion that Dreamworks’ proposed Halo project could be a kind of anti-Avatar – i.e., an epic sci-fi film that makes genocidal theocratic aliens into the enemies, rather than into victims of Earth-based imperialist aggression/corporate exploitation, etc. I’ve embedded a trailer above that should give you some sense of what such a film might feel like, particularly in terms of its epic scale.

My sense is that this would be a difficult project for Dreamworks to botch, provided their desire to retain some basic fidelity to the storyline and not turn off – I almost wrote ‘alienate’ – the game’s legion of fans. We’ll see.

The Social Network won the weekend at the box office. No surprises there, but it was disappointing that Disney’s Secretariat placed third behind the vulgar-looking Katherine Heigl comedy. And now, apparently, Disney’s new marketing chief is quasi-falling on her sword over the film’s mediocre opening. My sense is that people should be patient here; I expect Secretariat to have a long shelf life, and good word-of-mouth. It’s interesting that the Hollywood Reporter article about Disney’s marketing chief notes that Secretariat did much better business in the Heartland than on the coasts. That’s completely unsurprising to me, because the vibe of the film is so retro-old school … it’s almost like a classic women’s melodrama from the 1940s. My advice to the Disney people would be start marketing the film hard to women, and not just to people they’ve tagged as middle-American conservatives/Fox News viewers/Christians, etc.

French Vogue celebrates its 90th anniversary. Hooray.

French actress Lea Seydoux has been cast as the villainess of Mission: Impossible 4. This reminds me, happily, that French Vogue is celebrating its 90th anniversary this month. I’d been wanting to show everyone the superb cover of the anniversary issue (see right). It certainly captures French women at their finest, non? Vivre la differance, I always say. Over at fashion blogger Garance Doré’s site (see here and here) you can read about the 90th anniversary Masquerade Ball held at Karl Lagerfeld’s Paris apartment, in celebration of this momentous anniversary. We love Garance’s site here at Libertas, by the way. In somewhat related news, while the French are celebrating their beautiful women, a German group has just devised some new ‘body morphing’ software that can re-sculpt the bodies of actors and actresses. The Germans used to have such faith in their gene pool; apparently times have changed.

• On the Dwarves/Fairies/Gnomes Front, you can see below the new trailer for Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader if you’re still following that series. Also: Peter Jackson is out reminding people today that due to the complex MGM situation, his Hobbit films have still not technically been greenlit. No kidding – we may not see those films for another 40 years, the way things are going. And finally, Warner Brothers is canceling the planned release of the next ‘Harry Potter’ movie in 3D, as there simply isn’t enough time for them to do a high-quality 3D conversion. No doubt this is embarrassing for them – but it’s much less embarrassing than having a bad conversion panned. For the umpteenth time here at Libertas, I remind people that it’s always better to shoot natively in 3D when possible – rather than endure the vagaries, inadequacies and expense of the conversion process.

• On the Political Front, Shia LaBeouf apparently wants to play the young Karl Rove in College Republicans, which is described by the LA Times as “a comedy-drama about a young Karl Rove vying for the position of chief campus conservative under the guidance of one Lee Atwater.” I suppose that might be entertaining; Rove could certainly do worse – in terms of looks, though, it would probably be more accurate to cast Jonah Hill. In related news, people are still irritated that Oliver Stone’s Wall Street (starring Shia LaBeouf) wasn’t left-wing enough. This must really be a weird month for Stone, in so far as he just released a pro-Hugo Chavez doc. In other news: a new kids TV show is debuting featuring “Sharia-compliant Muslim superheroes.” Has Marvel optioned that yet? Incidentally, I want to remind everyone that Four Lions is being released here in the States on November 5th – although that film’s about sharia non-compliant Muslim terrorists.

• There’s an ocean of news on the Sci-Fi/Alien Invasion Front. First of all, actress Noomi Rapace is apparently the hot candidate to be the female lead – i.e., the primary lead – in Ridley Scott’s very expensive (and probably 3D) Alien prequel. [Minor note: James Cameron’s Aliens, still easily my favorite film of his, is coming to Blu-ray with a refurbished print that looks phenomenal.] In other news, a teaser trailer for The Thing shown at the New York Comic-Con has leaked out, although the image is of a poor quality; you can also read some new, spoilerific details just released today about the movie . Of note is that they’re re-shifting the story around the female lead, a lá Ripley in Aliens. And since this new version of The Thing is apparently intended to dovetail (like a prequel) with John Carpenter’s The Thing from 1982, it’s also worth mentioning today that a remake may be in the works of Carpenter’s other alien invasion movie from the 1980s, They Live. And finally on the alien invasion front: you can catch some great, behind-the-scenes footage of the new J.J. Abrams/Steven Spielberg Super 8 here and here. Watch as the U.S. military (circa 1979) fights off something very big attacking America’s heartland …

• In other Sci-Fi news, 20 minutes worth of Tron: Legacy footage will be shown on 3D IMAX screens October 28th. Also: there’s more news out today about the Daft Punk album for Tron (they’re doing the original score). The album will be released December 7th. One major bummer from today: shooting on the 3D Mad Max sequel Fury Road with Charlize Theron has been postponed for a year, for what appear to be financial reasons. That’s a pity, because they’d supposedly already done a lot of work on that.

• And in Retro Sci-Fi news, George Lucas’ THX-1138 is finally coming to Blu-ray; you can read the LA Times’ recent review of Roger Corman’s Star Crash with Caroline Munro, which just came to DVD and is one of my absolute favorite cult films of all time; the LA Times also reviews the new coffee-table book out on the old Star Trek TV series, called Star Trek 365; and finally, don’t forget to catch this hilarious, recently unearthed interview from 1977 with Harrison Ford about Star Wars. It’s really a hoot, with Ford in full-tilt smart-ass mode.

• AND IN TODAY’S MOST IMPORTANT NEWS …  Minka Kelly of the Friday Night Lights TV series has been dubbed ‘Esquire’s Sexiest Woman Alive for 2010.’ While I think it’s great that Ms. Kelly is still playing a cheerleader at age 30, I nonetheless find this a puzzling, inadequate choice for ‘Sexiest Woman Alive.’ In fact, Ms. Kelly is probably not even the sexiest actress in a magazine spread this month, a title which may go to Diora Baird (of the forthcoming vampire flick 30 Days of Night: Dark Days) who appears in the new issue of FHM. Judge for yourself. Incidentally, Ms. Baird played a green Orion girl in the recent Star Trek – but her scene with Chris Pine (Captain Kirk) got cut. You can watch the clip here – it’s pretty funny.

LFM Review: Secretariat

By Jason Apuzzo. When I was in high school, some of my football buddies and I would trek over to Hollywood Park here in Los Angeles on weekends to watch horse races. My friends went to gamble; I never bet a dime. I went for the spectacle, and most of all for the supernal beauty and intensity of the horses themselves. There was something so pure and lovely about them; at the same time, look into the eyes of any racehorse and you will see a kind of wild, daemonic energy that you don’t always see in other animals – something both divine and furious that propels them down the track. And although I haven’t really followed horse racing or horses in a long time, I was reminded of all that watching Randall Wallace’s superb new film, Secretariat – one of the better live-action films I’ve seen from Disney in years.

Truth be told, Secretariat really isn’t so much about the legendary race horse that electrified the sports world in 1973. Wallace and screenwriter Mike Rich realized, smartly, that the phenomenal thoroughbred (nicknamed ‘Big Red’) who still owns the track records at two of the three Triple Crown races – the Kentucky Derby, and the Belmont Stakes – is too legendary, too awesome a figure to center the story around. Almost forty years after the horse’s greatest triumphs, rooting for Secretariat is a bit like rooting for a hurricane – you already know the outcome. And so Wallace and Rich smartly shifted the story of Secretariat to where it quite clearly needed to be: with the horse’s fiesty, headstrong owner Penny Chenery, played in this film with style and intensity by Diane Lane. Secretariat is essentially Penny Chenery’s story – and, as we learn in ways both subtle and overt, her story is really America’s.

As Secretariat opens, we’re introduced to housewife Penny Chenery and her pleasant, unassuming family in what appears to be a middle-class, WASPish burg of Colorado. A sudden tragedy in the family sends her to Virginia, where she’s forced to take over the family horse ranch. Chenery does a little research, and discovers that the lineage of one of the foals in her care may portend something special – although the horse racing professionals around her, as well as her family, all doubt it. At a coin toss between Chenery and legendary racing owner Ogden Phipps over Secretariat’s fate, Phipps wins the coin toss – and picks another horse for himself, leaving young Secretariat to a suddenly very happy Chenery. And history, as they say, was made.

Chenery puts Secretariat in the hands of French-Canadian trainer Lucien Laurin, played here with warmth and (predictably) eccentric humor by John Malkovich. It’s nice to see Malkovich play something other than a freak, frankly – I wasn’t sure he could still do it. His performance brings a dash of life and sophistication to the proceedings. We follow Laurin and Chenery as they train the horse and prep it for its first big race at the Aqueduct Racetrack in New York. I don’t want to give anything away here, but let’s just say that Secretariat’s first big race doesn’t exactly go as planned; both Laurin and Chenery realize that they’ve been following the wrong strategy – they’ve been too cautious – with their curiously slow-starting, almost lazy horse.

Secretariat, you see, is a bit of a show-off, who likes to start his races slow – at a casual pace – typically beginning each race at the back of the pack … only to come charging in late and finish strong. This, we learn, is part of the dual miracle that Secretariat represented: not only did the horse shatter records, but he typically ran like he was asleep for the first half of any race. And, indeed, even when he finished races in record time he was typically still accelerating at the finish. Another way of putting it is that the horse Secretariat was a bit of a gambler, much like his owner – and difficult to train.

Secretariat’s ability to live up to his full potential becomes a huge issue for Penny Chenery because when her long-ill father (played by Scott Glenn) finally passes away, the estate taxes on his ranch amount to $7 million – and Chenery is suddenly in the awful position of having to either sell her beloved Secretariat, or gamble everything her family owns on the horse. In essence, the horse has to win The Triple Crown – or at a minimum The Kentucky Derby – or her family could be ruined.

The easy decision for Penny Chenery at this point would have been to sell the horse. It’s not the choice she makes, however. And let’s pause for a moment and dwell on this point.

As some of you may be aware, Secretariat has improbably become a ‘controversial’ film in recent days – largely due to the fact that Salon’s Andrew O’Hehir (hostile over the fact that Randall Wallace has been promoting Secretariat to Christian audiences) went off his meds recently and called the film (among other things) “a work of creepy, half-hilarious master-race propaganda almost worthy of Leni Riefenstahl …  a quasi-inspirational fantasia of American whiteness and power.”

O’Hehir’s toxic and abusive ramblings aside, it doesn’t surprise me that progressive critics of his ilk would react badly to Secretariat, as the film’s real purpose – it’s ‘agenda,’ as we say nowadays – seems to be the valorizing of a certain kind of stubborn, resourceful, tight-lipped Yankee/WASP woman (the type of woman Katherine Hepburn and Joan Crawford and Bette Davis built their careers on) that appears to have faded away in our current age of ‘resentment,’ as Harold Bloom likes to call it. If Secretariat is anything, it’s a love letter to that particular kind of woman from America’s past – and, hopefully, America’s future.

Our ‘resentful,’ politicized era – the era of Lady Gaga and Lisbeth Salander – no longer seems interested in women like Penny Chenery, i.e. classy, stiff-upper-lip-type dames in smart business suits with perfectly coiffed hair who get their way through moxie and determination. For various reasons we’ve told ourselves that we don’t need these kind of women anymore, especially on-screen, because we’ve ‘advanced’ into a Brave New World where women get their way through some combination of: a) harpie-like political agitation; b) screwing men blind, after they’re already pumped full of Viagra; c) narcissistic fugue-states, fueled by Facebook and reality TV, or; d) unloading a full machine gun clip at people they don’t like (Angelina Jolie/Milla Jovovitch/Kate Beckinsale, etc.).

It never seems to occur to people like O’Hehir – and there are a lot of them, particularly in the entertainment industry – that none of these represent valid options for most women, even if they’re sometimes fun to watch on-screen. Secretariat’s Penny Chenery is that old-school type of woman who dominated Hollywood cinema in the 1940s – and American life in the 1950s – who gets her way in life because she’s got steel in her spine, and is willing to take enormous risks even when the pusillanimous men around her (and there are a lot of them in this film) tell her not to.

So back to the film. As the stakes get higher for Chenery, people start to fall away. One of her daughters – the very blonde and very perky AJ Michalka – grows distant and starts to dabble in left-wing activism (admittedly, some of the scenes with Michalka are obviously played for laughs). More serious is that Chenery’s brother – and even her husband – abandon her at one point, consigning her to take all the financial risks associated with backing the horse. Ouch. [Why Chenery lets these stiff jerks so easily back into her life later on is never adequately explained, unfortunately – and this represents one of the weaker aspects of the film.] Everybody outside of the horse’s training staff starts to think she’s crazy – and in reality, of course, she is crazy. Most people would not wager their family’s future on a horse winning The Triple Crown. But as we all know, miracles do sometimes happen …

This is the point in the film where we hunker down at the track and really start to see the horses race – because these beautiful and fiery creatures really are miracles. And here the film truly comes to life . The two most significant races shown in the film – The Kentucky Derby, and The Belmont Stakes – play out with almost  unbearable suspense, due to Secretariat’s cheeky unwillingness to start a race strong. So at the outset of the Kentucky Derby, Secretariat starts slow again – and Penny’s life dangles before her eyes and ours, and the trainer despairs and threatens to walk out – until … this glorious, powerful, and weirdly arrogant animal called Secretariat takes over and leaves the rest of the field in the dust, smashing Churchill Downs’ track record.

And of course, that’s only the first of Secretariat’s three great races that we see. I won’t spoil the other two for your, but The Belmont is really a whopper …

Classic races revisited.

If I have a quibble with Secretariat, it would be about the racing sequences, however – which are suspenseful and well-paced, but which somehow lack the speed and the grandeur these events have in person. Something this film was crying out for was a large format like IMAX – in the old days, Cinerama would’ve been perfect – because there is something truly awe-inspiring about watching these fantastic animals, with their furious eyes and driving muscles, race wildly around the racetrack. Instead, what Randall Wallace does periodically is to intercut footage shot on consumer-level, high-def camcorders from the jockey’s perspective – and while this brings a certain frenetic intensity to the races, it somehow pulls the movie away from the mythic grandeur it deserves. I mean, this is Secretariat we’re supposed to be watching here – not your kid’s pet pony on YouTube. [By the way, in his retirement Secretariat would sire some 600 foals. No wonder he always looks like he’s smiling.]

That aside, the drama between Chenery and her family gradually subsides in the third act of the film – there are no really dramatic resolutions – in the wake of the awesome spectacle that Secretariat and his victories represented. What we’re left with is the notion that Penny Chenery’s stubborn faith in her horse was validated, far beyond what she or anyone else might have imagined. Basically, she was wildly impractical – crazy – but her persistence paid off. How perfectly American. Only four years before Secretariat’s triumphs, that same kind of craziness and dogged persistence had put American astronauts on the Moon.

Diane Lane is sensitive, intelligent and strong as Penny Chenery. This is clearly her film, and she’ll likely get an Oscar nomination – although I admit that the film buff in me wonders what Bette Davis would’ve done with this same role. Wow. In any case, it was also great to see Fred Thompson appear briefly as owner ‘Bull’ Hancock. There should be a law requiring all films even tangentially dealing with the American South to feature Fred Thompson, and he should always have a name like ‘Bull’ or ‘Colonel’ or ‘Dutch’ or something like that. It’s good stuff.

I’m a little down on the film’s music, but veteran Aussie cinematographer Dean Semler (The Road Warrior) did a nice job on the film given Wallace’s visual strategy for it – and kudos to the production design team for recreating the early 1970s without lapsing into too much cliché. The costuming also is spot on, and Diane Lane’s suits and hair are almost stars of the film in their own right.

Beyond all that, I’d like to thank Wallace and Mike Rich for having the courage, and gentle good humor, to depict 60’s left-wing/hippie activism for what it so often (if not always) was – a rebellious regression on the part of young kids looking for their parents’ attention.

I doubt very much that Secretariat will become any sort of ‘hot-button’-type film, drawing controversy. The film is much too sentimental and warm-hearted for that, and Disney should expect the film to have a long lifespan as one of the better, ‘inspirational’ sports films. I also tend to think that the ‘Christian subtext’ of the film has been a bit overplayed in the media; beyond a few quotations of scripture, and a few hymns on the soundtrack, there isn’t really very much religious content in the film, at all – and no prosthelytizing of any kind.

Really what the film is about is one plucky, indomitable woman who took a big gamble – and about her stud of a horse, who ironically liked to gamble the same way. Everything paid off big for them both.

Dreamworks’ Halo Movie, Christina Hendricks + Hollywood Round-up, 10/7

By Jason Apuzzo. • A lot of news comes to us today from the Sci-Fi/Alien Invasion front. First of all, it appears that Dreamworks is still contemplating bringing the Halo video game to the screen. Much like George Lucas’ current Clone Wars saga, or James Cameron’s Avatar (or Aliens, for that matter), Halo is another space-troopers story that traces its lineage back to Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers of 1959. And even though there have been an endless number of disputes recently between Universal, Fox and others over this property, I think it would be a great saga to bring to the screen – if done properly, of course. Peter Jackson was originally supposed to supervise this project; later it was Neil Blomkamp; now, it appears, the whole thing has landed in Steven Spielberg’s lap, at least in so far as who makes the major decisions – so we’ll see how this whole thing goes. This project would obviously come with a gigantic built-in fan base – and would represent a major, big-budget addition to the burgeoning ‘alien invasion’ genre (with all its rich subtexts) that we’ve been chronicling so assiduously here at Libertas.

• In other news on this same front, the next Transformers movie will apparently be called Transformers 3: The Dark of the Moon; and there’s been an update on Sam Raimi’s Earth Defense Force project – apparently he would only be producing that film, rather than directing it. The reason for that became clear yesterday when Raimi committed to directing Oz: The Great and Powerful (the 3D big-budget ‘sequel’ to the original Wizard of Oz). Also: we got more details yesterday about James Cameron’s new/extended/Director’s cut/special edition/steel-belted/air conditioned/new-and-improved Avatar DVD with its 1000 hours of supplemental materials, 400 deleted scenes, 500 cast interviews, and Cameron’s CGI virtual/fantasy-simulation of the Bush Impeachment Proceedings. Just kidding. The DVD debuts November 16th, and the opening of the film will contain an as-yet-unseen sequence featuring Sam Worthington’s character on a hyper-polluted, dystopian Earth. You can catch a glimpse of that sequence in some new trailers just released. Incidentally, I’m reminded here of an excellent list that a reader named Emma Taylor recently sent me on The 20 Greatest Works of Dystopian Literature. For some odd and unfathomable reason, the Avatar novel adaptation has not yet made that list – I guess because it’s still in galleys? 😉 Thanks to Emma for the list.

• Most likely you’ve heard by now that Zack Snyder (300, The Watchmen, Legend of the Guardians, Sucker Punch) has been hired by Christopher Nolan to direct the Superman reboot. We’re also learning that Nolan may want to take the franchise in a somewhat ‘post modern’ direction – with reporter Clark Kent traveling the world like Christiane Amanpour, struggling over whether he wants to even be Superman – and that the main villain in the new film may be General Zod. On what may be a related note, we’re also learning that the project currently has script problems. So what does all this mean? Actually, we don’t know what all this means – but my advice would be to keep an eye on Nolan here, because he’s the one obviously running the show. My sense is that Nolan has hired someone to carry out his vision, not someone else’s – which is likely why Darren Aronofsky was rejected, and why Aronofsky’s publicist is currently running around town convincing everyone that his client is still hireable on superhero projects. In related Nolan news, Batman 3 will apparently start shooting in New Orleans in April; and in other superhero news, Emma Stone will now apparently be playing Gwen Stacy in the Spider-Man 3D reboot.

• Other news and notes: Peter Jackson has finally been confirmed as the director for the two Hobbit films, which will apparently be shot at a cost of around $500 million, and in 3D. I’m still having a hard time believing that budget, but there it is. Also: it appears that Die Hard 5 may be happening (I couldn’t care less, frankly); and a screenwriter has been found for the legendary Steve McQueen-Yucatan project that Robert Downey is reviving. My advice would be to put a digital Steve McQueen (and a digital Ali Macgraw?) in that project, rather than Downey – whom I still don’t like, even if the rest of Planet Earth fawns over him.

There’s a movement afoot to put Charlton Heston’s likeness on a stamp. Libertas favors this effort, and you can read more about it at The Hollywood Reporter.

• In related news (i.e., people whose likeness appears on stamps), Joel Surnow’s miniseries on the Kennedys is currently shopping for international distributors at the big Cannes TV market.

• AND IN TODAY’S MOST IMPORTANT NEWS … Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks (see above) is everywhere. She just did a fashion shoot for Harpers Bazaar, and some photos were just released of her on the set of the new indie thriller, Drive. And, in a new interview, she says that she gets teary-eyed when curvy women tell her that she’s made them feel beautiful and sexy. [Did Gloria Steinem ever have that effect on women?] Somebody please cast her in a 3D film  – now! – so the rest of us can also get teary-eyed …

And that’s what’s happening today in the wonderful world of Hollywood.

The Social Network: How Hollywood Doesn’t Understand Innovation + The New Thing & Hollywood Round-up, 10/4

By Jason Apuzzo. The Social Network took top honors at the box office over the weekend. I saw the film on Friday, and although I found it interesting the film was also curiously unmoving and somewhat clinical. Essentially it felt like a gossipy Vanity Fair article rather than a movie. Silicon Valley is apparently reacting to the film badly, believing that Hollywood doesn’t really understand them at all. They’re right. Basically, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and director David Fincher don’t really know what to do with Mark Zuckerberg in this film other than to slap the usual geeky-Jewish-nerd template over him, and assume that his prime motivations for creating Facebook were: girls and money.

A motivation they seem completely incapable of understanding is: innovation.

And this, ultimately, is why the movie fails as a depiction of Silicon Valley culture. In an industry based on sequels, remakes and franchise properties, I’m sure it must be difficult for Hollywood people to grasp what makes the Silicon Valley guys and girls tick: a desire to innovate, to create technologies no one has ever dreamed-of before, to push the boundaries of science and industry. This is not what Hollywood has any interest in any more, to say the least. But a spirit of innovation is what makes people like Steve Jobs tick. Or filmmakers like George Lucas, or the Pixar guys, or Francis Coppola – all of whom decamped for the Bay Area decades ago, for reasons few people in Hollywood (whether liberal or conservative) seem capable of understanding.

Oh and incidentally, as of this month Steve Jobs’ Apple may currently be replacing Exxon as the most valuable company in the world, in terms of market capitalization. That’s another development the Hollywood guys probably don’t understand at all.

A fun little footnote here. Some years back when I was a graduate student at Stanford (I was studying lit), I had a buddy in the computer science department there. We would occasionally hang out at the computer lab late at night and shoot the breeze. Often there would also be these two other guys there, huddled off in a corner working on something. They always seemed busy, and intense – my buddy and I always wondered what they were working on.

I never gave those guys much thought until years later when I saw their pictures, and realized that those two dudes in the lab were … Sergey Brin and Larry Page.

And what warm, wonderful guys they were! 😉

• First it was MGM bankruptcy, then losing Guillermo del Toro, then labor troubles, and now a fire has burned down a crucial workshop in New Zealand that was to be used for production on Peter Jackson’s already-troubled Hobbit adaptation. Plus: word is now leaking that the 2 Hobbit films may be shot in 3D, at a cost potentially as high as $500 million. Is there really that much juice in this series? I sure hope so, for Jackson’s sake (and MGM’s).

• I was very sorry to read that one of my favorite directors, John McTiernan (Predator, Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, Die Hard: With a Vengeance), just got sentenced to one year in prison for his role in the Anthony Pellicano wiretapping scandal. It could’ve been worse, though: he could’ve been forced to direct a Green Hornet sequel.

Hugh Hefner’s life may be getting a BBC miniseries treatment, and Brett Ratner may be reviving the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, sans Eddie Murphy. Why do those two stories seem related? It must have something to do with bringing things back from near-death.

Mary Jane is apparently going to be played by Emma Stone in the Spider-Man reboot. No surprises there. And you’ve probably already heard by now that Wonder Woman will be coming back to television, in a new series to be written and produced by David E. Kelley. Few details are available about what’s planned for this reboot, so we’ll be keeping an eye out …

• On the Sci-Fi/Alien Invasion front, Olivia Wilde of Tron and Cowboys and Aliens (and ACLU ads) has now been cast in (the project formerly known as)I.m. mortal. Plus, check out this interesting set visit to the forthcoming The Thing prequel/remake/reboot (see the picture above); Matt Reeves talks about Super 8 and also the potential of a Cloverfield 2; and Mad Men’s January Jones may be doing a lingerie scene for X-Men: First Class, so that’s a plus.

• AND IN TODAY’S MOST IMPORTANT NEWS … did you know that somebody did a prequel to Death Race, called Death Race 2: The Beginning … with Danny Trejo and Sean Bean? Neither did I, but apparently it’s going straight to DVD – and it also stars South African model Tanit Phoenix, who as a brunette might be a great candidate to play the new Wonder Woman on TV. Judge for yourself …

And that’s what’s happening today in the wonderful world of Hollywood.
